Great restaurants and cocktail bars! Shout out to Laser Wolf, Deux Chats, With Others and Baby Blues (breakfast). Domino Park’s a great place to walk and see across to Manhattan. Easy access to the city via subway.
We loved the Museum of the Moving Image. I am a frequent museum go-er but had never heard of this museum. Since it was right around the corner from where we were staying, my husband and I decided to go -- and were we ever surprised and impressed. We could have spent all day there. Words can't describe how great this place is. If you are a movie or TV buff, this is a must-see. Even if you are not (like me), you should still go. I'm sure you'll be bowled over with this place.
NYC is one of the safest cities in the USA. You can safely walk around most areas - especially tourist spots. Learn about how to ride the subway before you go. Take advantage of MTA trip planner & buy a multi day ticket. There are free subway paper maps at any manned subway booth. New Yorkers are usually willing to point you in the right direction when looking for somewhere. Take the 'tour' of the city first thing - hop on/hop off buses. I recommend staying 'on'. You can see all the architecture this way. See a live performance - you can get cheaper tickets - do a google search. See a museum - I recommend an afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. See the 911 Memorial, but understand the museum is like a reenactment of that day. There are thousands (literally) of other things to do. Come prepared to walk, so ditch fashion shoes & wear walking shoes. Eat ethnically. You can get a burger at home.
Can't review all of Brooklyn, but GreenPoint was cool, restaurants, bars, take-outs, convenience stores, nice feel to the area. Easy subway access to rest of NYC, Ubers everywhere, trees, just a nice vibe really.
Long Island City is a very mixed neighbourhood - industrial, working class, and areas being gentrified. Not everyone would feel comfortable walking around the neighborhood. But there is hip stuff developing.
A big happening city that lives up to its reputation with a vibrant arts scene and gorgeous early 20th century architecture, leafy open spaces and well connected streets with an efficient, although very grubby subway system. The theatre district, Banksy Museum, Met Opera are worth every minute. This famed buzz and style are hopelessly marred by pavements that are stained with dog poo, with a perennial stink of dog urine because NY dog owners refuse to rinse down their pets' mess, leaving it to the rain to clean the streets, thus contaminating pedestrian walkways for everyone
